Everything You Need to Know About
Garage Door Service
Regular garage door maintenance is generally recommended at
least once a year. Doors exposed to frequent use, coastal
humidity and salt air may benefit from more frequent inspections
to identify corrosion, loose hardware, unusual movement or
developing wear.
Grinding, squeaking or rattling noises, slow movement, uneven
travel, difficulty opening, unexpected reversing or a door that
becomes stuck can indicate a problem. Springs, cables, rollers,
tracks, hinges or opener components may require inspection.
High humidity, heat and salt air can contribute to corrosion,
friction and wear on tracks, rollers, springs and other metal
hardware. Regular cleaning, suitable lubrication and routine
inspections can help identify coastal wear before it affects
normal door movement.
Avoid forcing the garage door open or closed. A stuck door may
involve a broken spring, damaged cable, displaced roller,
misaligned track or opener problem. The system should be
inspected to identify the obstruction before normal operation
resumes.
A garage door that suddenly feels heavy, becomes difficult to
lift, moves unevenly, stops unexpectedly or makes unusual sounds
may have a spring problem. A visible gap in a torsion spring can
also indicate that the spring has fractured.
The opener may be functioning while another component creates
resistance. Problems with springs, cables, rollers, tracks,
hinges, gears or the drive mechanism can prevent proper
movement. Inspecting both the opener and mechanical hardware
helps locate the actual cause.
Uneven movement can be caused by loose or damaged cables,
improper spring balance, worn rollers, shifted tracks or damaged
mounting hardware. Since these components work together, the
complete lifting and guiding system should be checked before
deciding which part requires repair.
Immediate reversing can result from misaligned safety sensors,
incorrect travel settings, an obstruction in the door path,
damaged tracks or excessive mechanical resistance. Checking the
sensors, opener settings and connected door hardware can help
determine the source of the problem.
